How Long Should a Demo Video Be? Lengths per Cut
Oct 26, 2026 • 7 minute read
WildanHow long should a demo video be? As short as the job allows, and for a launch, rarely longer than a minute. A hook works in 20 seconds or less, a teaser in 15 to 30, a pitch in 30 to 45, and a demo that shows one task start to finish in about 60 seconds. The length comes from the job the video does, not from how much your product can do.
This is part 5 of how to make a product demo video.
How long should a demo video be, by cut
| Cut | Length | Why that long | Where it plays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hook | up to 20 s | One idea, landed in the first second, one call to action | X, TikTok, Reels, Shorts, ads |
| Teaser | 15 to 30 s | A sliver of the product and a date; any longer and you start explaining | Waitlist page, X, the week before launch |
| Pitch | 30 to 45 s | Problem, your real screen, proof and an offer, each in a few seconds | Product Hunt, your homepage, YC application |
| Demo | about 60 s | One task, start to finish, at a pace people can follow | Onboarding, docs, sales follow-ups |
These are upper limits, not targets. A 12-second hook that lands is better than a 20-second hook that lands late. If you're not sure which cut you're making, part 2 covers how to pick.
What the data says about video length
Shorter videos get watched further through. Wistia, which hosts business video, analyzed over 13 million videos for its 2026 State of Video report, and its article on optimal video length puts it plainly: "Videos under a minute average a 52% engagement rate." Wistia defines that as viewers typically watching about half of the video's total length.
Two things follow for a demo video:
- Even a short video loses about half its viewing time. On average, people watch around half of a sub-minute video. Whatever matters most, the result on screen or the offer, has to come early.
- The goal sets the length. Wistia's guidance in the same article matches length to goal: under a minute to "raise brand awareness and engage on social" (promos, product teasers), and 1 to 5 minutes to "educate or explain", where it puts how-tos and product demos. A launch video on X or Product Hunt is the first kind. A full walkthrough for someone who already signed up is the second kind, and it can run longer. The demo cut sits at the short end of that range: one task, about a minute.
Platforms point the same way. LinkedIn accepts video ads from three seconds to 30 minutes but recommends 15 to 30 seconds so a video qualifies for all its feed placements.
Why a demo video doesn't need to be long
Most demo videos run long for the same few reasons, and none of them help the viewer:
- Showing every feature. Each extra feature adds seconds and pulls attention away from the one that matters. Show one task. Link to the rest.
- Real-time waiting. Page loads, spinners, typing. Cut them. Nobody misses a loading state.
- A logo intro and an outro. Five seconds at each end is ten seconds of a short video with no product in it.
- Narrating the clicks. If the voice-over describes what's already visible, the video has to slow down to match it.
- Stretching to fill a slot. There is no minimum length for a launch video. If the job is done in 40 seconds, stop at 40.
When longer is fine
Some videos should be longer than a minute, and that's fine as long as you know it's a different video:
- Tutorials and onboarding courses. Someone who's already signed up and wants to learn the product will watch several minutes. Split them by task anyway, one short video each, so people can find the one they need.
- Recorded sales demos. A live demo for one buyer follows their questions. That's a call, not a demo video.
- Webinars and walkthroughs. Long by design, watched by people who chose to.
The demo cut (about a minute) is the short version of these: one task, start to finish, the thing a new user or a buyer wants to see before committing to more.
Platform limits are not targets
Almost every platform lets you post far longer than a demo should run. YouTube Shorts can run up to three minutes for square or vertical video. LinkedIn video ads can run 30 minutes. Those limits tell you what's allowed, not what works. Your cut sets the length; the platform just has to allow it. Part 6 covers sizes and formats per platform.
How to get a demo video under a minute
- Start with the result. If the strongest frame is the end of the task, show a second of it first, then show how you got there.
- Write the script to the limit. Time the voice-over read aloud. If it's over, cut whole lines. See the script templates.
- Cut every wait. Jump from the click to the result.
- Speed up the in-between steps. Typing and scrolling can run faster than real time as long as the viewer can still follow.
- Cut the intro. The first second is the product or the problem, not your logo.
- Watch it on your phone, muted. If you lose interest, so will they. Cut where you looked away.
A quick test
Before you post, ask:
- Does the viewer see the product in the first few seconds?
- Is the result on screen before the halfway mark?
- Does every second either show the task or explain why it matters?
- Is it inside the limit for its cut?
If any answer is no, cut more.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a demo video be for a product launch?
About a minute or less. A launch demo video works best when the length matches its cut: a hook up to 20 seconds, a teaser 15 to 30 seconds, a pitch 30 to 45 seconds and a demo of one task about 60 seconds.
Is a 2-minute demo video too long?
For a launch, usually yes: a demo video that shows one task start to finish fits in about a minute. Longer videos suit tutorials, onboarding and walkthroughs for people who already signed up, which Wistia's guide to video length puts in the 1 to 5 minute range for videos that educate or explain.
How long should a Product Hunt video be?
30 to 45 seconds. A Product Hunt video is a pitch: the problem, your real screen, proof and the offer, each in a few seconds.
What is the best demo video length for social media?
Under 20 seconds for a hook in the feed on X, TikTok, Reels and Shorts. Wistia's guidance puts videos meant to engage on social under a minute, and LinkedIn recommends 15 to 30 seconds for video ads so they qualify for every feed placement.
How much of a short video do people actually watch?
About half. Wistia reports that videos under a minute average a 52% engagement rate, meaning viewers typically watch about half of the video's length, so the result or the offer in a demo video has to come early.
How long can a YouTube Short be?
Up to three minutes. A YouTube video counts as a Short when it is square or vertical and runs up to three minutes, but that limit is what's allowed, not a target for a demo video.
How do I make a demo video shorter?
Cut every wait, the logo intro and any line that narrates a visible click, and speed up typing and scrolling. Starting a demo video with the result and showing one task instead of every feature also keeps it near a minute.
Every Demo Editor video is made as one of the four cuts and checked for running over length before you get it, so a demo stays about a minute and a hook stays under 20 seconds. See the pricing or example videos.
